Enrollment & changes

Former employees with IU retiree status who are under age 65 are eligible to enroll if covered by an IU health plan at the time of retirement or when COBRA eligibility ends.

Dependent eligibility

A retiree’s dependents (spouse and eligible children) are covered by the retiree’s IU-sponsored health plan if they are eligible and covered at the time of separation from the university.

Once enrolled in an IU retiree medical plan, no new dependents cannot be added. Dependents are only eligible as long as the retiree is enrolled. If the retiree passes away, surviving dependents are eligible if the former employee has retiree status at the time of death or the retiree’s death occurs while the dependents are covered under the retiree’s IU-sponsored plan. However, If the retiree and dependents do not elect an IU-sponsored medical plan at the time of retirement, they cannot participate at a later time.

It is your responsibility to notify IU Human Resources of any changes that will affect communications or eligibility including:

  • Changes in status such as, divorce, legal separation, change in disability status, or death of a covered individual
  • Address changes
  • Addition or loss of coverage under another group health plan Contact IUHR at askHR@iu.edu or (812) 856-1234

Retirees may terminate coverage at any time by notifying IU Human Resources at askHR@iu.edu or (812) 856-1234. Once a retiree terminates IU-sponsored retiree healthcare coverage, they cannot re-enroll at a later time.

Retiree coverage ends on the first day of the month that the required contribution is not made. Dependent coverage ends when:

  • The retiree’s coverage ends for a reason other than death
  • They cease to meet the definition of an eligible dependent
  • Discontinuance of all dependent coverage under the plan
  • When the dependent becomes eligible for employee coverage.
