IU Blue Retiree Plan

Your benefits explained

Enrollment in this plan includes telehealth visits, vision coverage, and a full range of no-cost added benefits. However, participants must enroll in Medicare Part D to receive prescription coverage.

Basic medical benefits are based on paying what Medicare doesn't pay:

  • Medicare A deductible
  • Medicare B deductible and coinsurance

Major medical benefits are subject to deductible and copays. This includes covered services that Medicare does not pay in full, for example:

  • Skilled nursing facility stays over 100 days
  • Charges over the allowed amount (up to UCR allowances) for covered services rendered by unassigned providers
  • Hospital inpatient after day 150
  • Skilled nursing services provided outside a hospital

There is a wellness benefit to the plan that includes limited coverage for dental, vision, and hearing.

Enrollment & changes

If you’re a former employee with IU retiree status, are age 65 or older, and have been continuously covered by an IU medical plan (as an employee, spouse, retiree, or COBRA participant), you’re eligible to enroll in this plan. This is a Medicare supplement plan, so you also have to be enrolled in Medicare Parts A & B.

Dependent eligibility

Your spouse and children under age 26 are also eligible for coverage as long as they were enrolled on your IU medical plan on the date you retired. If they are under age 65, they will be enrolled in the Anthem Under 65 PPO HDHP until they become eligible for Medicare. If you pass away while enrolled on the plan, your surviving spouse and children can keep their coverage. If your surviving spouse also passes away, your remaining children can keep their coverage. Survivors are responsible for notifying the university of the death and of their request to continue coverage, and are responsible for paying the full cost of their premiums..

It is your responsibility to notify IU Human Resources of any changes that will affect communications or eligibility including:

  • Changes in status such as, divorce, legal separation, change in disability status, or death of a covered individual
  • Address changes
  • Addition or loss of coverage under another group health plan Contact IUHR at askHR@iu.edu or (812) 856-1234

Retirees may terminate coverage at any time by notifying IU Human Resources at askHR@iu.edu or (812) 856-1234. Once a retiree terminates IU-sponsored retiree healthcare coverage, they cannot re-enroll at a later time.

Retiree coverage ends on the first day of the month that the required contribution is not made. Dependent coverage ends when:

  • The retiree’s coverage ends for a reason other than death
  • They cease to meet the definition of an eligible dependent
  • Discontinuance of all dependent coverage under the plan
  • When the dependent becomes eligible for employee coverage.
