Step 2: Learn about your benefits
Starting a new job can be overwhelming, especially when learning about all the benefits available to you. Before diving into the enrollment process, there are several resources you can review to better understand the benefits at IU.
New Employee Orientation
If you haven't already, we highly recommend you complete the self-guided New Employee Orientation course by clicking the link below. You are automatically enrolled on or before your first day of employment, but any IU employee can register or view the course at any time.

Explore the benefits overview
Your employment type will determine your eligibility for certain benefits, so it's a good idea to first know your employee category and then review the benefits available to you before enrolling.

Know your rights and protections
Federal law requires that Indiana University provide certain benefit-related notices to employees. These notices help you understand your rights, responsibilities, and protections under programs such as COBRA, HIPAA, the ACA, and more.

Learn about dependent eligibility
Review the eligibility guidelines to learn which of your dependents (spouse and children) are eligible for enrollment on your benefit plans. You may also be required to provide certain documentation to enroll dependents, so be sure to review the criteria before enrolling.

Understand enrollment deadlines
For some benefits, you must enroll within 30 days of becoming eligible. If you do not, you may not have the opportunity to enroll again until the annual open enrollment period, barring a mid-year life event. The enrollment deadlines listed below are from your date of hire into the eligible position, and your coverage will be retroactive back to your date of hire.
