Dental coverage at IU

We know that maintaining good oral health is essential to your overall well-being. That’s why we offer a comprehensive dental plan through Cigna to help you and your family access the dental care you need.

Do I need an ID card?

Plan basics

You can enroll in the IU dental plan if you are a full-time (75% FTE or greater) appointed academic or staff employee, or a full-time IU resident.

Separate dental plan enrollment

You may elect dental coverage with or without electing medical coverage. Eligible dependents not enrolled in medical coverage may also be enrolled in dental coverage as long as you are enrolled.

Your dental benefits

You can receive dental care from any licensed dentist. However, you will receive a higher level of benefits when you visit a Total CIGNA PPO Network dentist.

Here’s what your coverage includes when you see a Total Cigna PPO Network dentist:

  • Two routine cleanings and exams (preventative care) per year covered at 100%
  • Annual $25 deductible (not applied to preventive care)
  • Other services covered at 50% up to the annual benefit limit

Annual benefit limit

With Cigna Dental WellnessPlus, your preventive care earns you higher coverage for the next year.

  • Starting limit: Each covered member starts with an annual benefit limit of $1,200.
  • Increase your limit: When you and your covered family members each receive at least one preventive cleaning or exam per calendar year, your annual benefit limit increases by $100 the following year. This increase can continue yearly, allowing you to reach a maximum limit of $1,500 per member.

Child orthodontia: If your children need orthodontic care, the IU dental plan covers child orthodontia up to a $1,000 lifetime limit per child.

Your dental insurance ID card

No physical dental ID card will be mailed to you. Instead, you can either print a temporary ID card or create an account at MyCigna to print a personalized card.

Use the myCigna app

You can use this app to view your ID card, find a dentist, review your coverage, estimate costs, and manage your benefits online.

You have the opportunity to change your benefits and add or remove dependents during the Open Enrollment period, which takes place in the fall every year.

At other times of the year, there are some changes you can make if you have a qualifying life event, such as marriage/divorce, birth of a child, or you become eligible for Medicaid/Medicare. You can also enroll in or change your HSA at any time during the year.
