Job classifications defined

Not sure which classification describes your job at IU? You can find details on which category your position falls into by viewing the "Job Details" in your profile in the Employee Center on One.IU.

We've also defined the different classification groups here. Your benefits eligibility and options may vary depending on your employment type, so it's important to know the difference between the classifications.

If you are an academic or exempt staff employee at IU, you are paid a regular salary and are not eligible for overtime pay.

You have a wide range of benefits, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, retirement plans, tuition assistance, paid time off, and more.

If you are a non-exempt staff employee at IU, you are eligible to receive overtime pay for work beyond the regular workweek and schedule. You will typically track your hours precisely.

You have a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, retirement options, tuition assistance, paid time off, and more.

A part-time academic or staff employee is an at-will employee who does not occupy a budgeted line position at IU.

As a part-time academic or staff employee working 50 to 74 percent FTE (20–37.5 hours per week), you are eligible for retirement plan options. Find paid time off and holiday benefits on the page for your group.

If you are a non-budgeted employee who works part-time hours and is paid on an hourly basis, you are an hourly employee at IU.

While you may have different benefit options than full-time employees, we encourage you to explore the resources available.

If you are an IU resident appointed by the IUSM Office of Graduate Medical Education or IU School of Optometry, you are eligible to receive certain benefits, including medical and dental coverage, as follows:

  • Full-time (75-100% FTE): Eligible for all benefits
  • Part-time (50-74% FTE): Eligible for all benefits except TSB pre-tax spending account and Personal Accident Insurance
