Managing diabetes takes daily attention, but you don’t have to navigate it alone. With your IU-sponsored health insurance, you have access to comprehensive coverage and support resources to prevent or manage diabetes.

Marathon Health Chronic Condition Management
IU medical plan members can take advantage of no-cost diabetes support through the Marathon Health employee health centers. Here's what's included:
- Personalized care plan to help you stay motivated and accountable.
- Free glucometer, test strips, and lancets (HealthPro Easy Touch) delivered directly to your home.
- Free on-site labs at any Marathon Health center.
- On-site dispensing of over 100 common medications (including medications for diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma, depression, and antibiotics).
- One-on-one health coaching focused on sustainable lifestyle changes.
- Support for related conditions such as hypertension, depression, anxiety, weight management, and tobacco cessation, including referrals to specialists, as needed.
- Flexibility to use them much or as little as you choose. Marathon Health can act as your primary diabetes provider, or you can continue seeing your own providers. As long as you complete the initial visit and an annual follow-up visit with Marathon Health, you can remain in the program and continue receiving free supplies.
How to get started
Step 1: Create an account on the Marathon Health Patient Portal.
Step 2: Schedule an in-person or virtual chronic condition management visit through the patient portal or mobile app, or by calling +1-866-434-3255.
Step 3: During your visit, you’ll discuss your medical history, review your medications and goals, and collaborate with your provider to create a care plan. They will also set up your free supplies and schedule any recommended follow-up care.
Step 4 (Optional): Meet with a Marathon Health coach for one-on-one support related to nutrition, physical activity, weight management, tobacco cessation, or stress management.
IU medical plan coverage
Prescription drugs
IU’s medical plans include comprehensive coverage for prescription drugs and supplies through the CVS Caremark prescription drug benefit. Covered benefits include:
- Free TRUE METRIX or Accu-Chek blood glucose meter through the CVS Caremark Diabetic Meter program.
- Glucometers, test strips, and lancets (use preferred brands for lower costs).
- Insulin and non-insulin diabetes medications.
- Check the prescription page to review the list of covered medications (formulary) and the preventive drug lists.
Some medications may require prior authorization or step therapy. For questions or assistance with prescriptions, pharmacy supplies, prior authorization, and meter programs, contact CVS Caremark at +1-866-234-6952.
Medical services
IU’s Anthem medical plans provide comprehensive coverage to prevent or manage diabetes, including the services listed below. Most services are covered with a 20% coinsurance after you meet your deductible. Preventive services are covered at no cost to you.
- Primary care and specialist visits (including endocrinology)
- Lab testing (such as A1C, lipid panels, and kidney function tests)
- Preventive screenings
- Annual eye exams and foot exams
- Insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors, when medically necessary

Other programs and resources
Dental care for diabetics: If you’re enrolled in an IU dental plan, you may qualify for additional benefits through the Cigna Dental Health Oral Integration Program. This voluntary program is open to members with certain medical conditions linked gum disease, such as diabetes. When you pay for an eligible dental service to treat gum disease or tooth decay, the program reimburses you for some of those out-of-pocket expenses. There’s no additional cost for the program – if you sign up and qualify, you get reimbursed. Learn more about the program and how to sign up.
