Employee onboarding is an ongoing process
Employee onboarding doesn’t end in the first week or even month. It should be viewed as a holistic process rather than an event. It takes many months to ensure new staff members understand the expectations of their role and team and feel as if they can contribute and belong at IU.
According to Gallup, effective onboarding answers five important questions for new employees.
- What is my role? What is expected of me in the role?
- What are my strengths? Where can my strengths be utilized and valued at IU?
- Who are my partners? Who supports me?
- What do we believe in around here? How does IU do things?
- What does my future look like here? How can I grow at IU?
To ensure these questions are answered for your new employee, begin regular one-on-one performance conversations. Performance at IU resources provide helpful templates for these conversations.
Be familiar with the Evaluation Periods for New, Promoted, and Transferred Employees policy. Ensure you are following the policy as appropriate for your new hire. If you have questions, please reach out to your unit’s HR representative.
It’s important that you’re relentlessly invested in the success of your new hire. Be intentional about building a successful employee experience.
