We know how hard you work as an IU resident, and we want to ensure you have the support you need in case something unexpected happens. That’s why we provide you with comprehensive, no-cost, long-term disability insurance coverage through Med Plus Advantage.

This plan is designed specifically with resident physicians in mind, offering a range of benefits to protect you and your future.

Plan provision

Here’s what your coverage includes:

  • $2,500 monthly benefit: This provides financial support while you’re unable to work.
  • 90-day waiting period: Benefits begin after 90 days of disability.
  • Benefits to normal Social Security retirement age: You’ll receive benefits until you reach your normal Social Security retirement age (typically age 67).
  • Cost of living rider: Your benefit increases annually based on changes in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) to a maximum of 4.5%, helping your benefits keep pace with inflation.
  • $200,000 student loan payoff: For qualifying disabilities, you can receive assistance with your student loans.
  • Benefit increase for qualifying disabilities: Your monthly benefit doubles to $5,000 for certain qualifying disabilities.

What is Assist America?

Assist America is a service that provides comprehensive support during medical emergencies and other unexpected situations while you’re traveling. It offers a wide range of services, including:

If you become ill or injured while traveling and require care that’s not available locally, Assist America will arrange and pay for your transportation to the nearest appropriate medical facility.

If you’re hospitalized alone for more than seven days, Assist America will arrange and pay for a loved one to travel to be with you.

If necessary, Assist America will arrange and pay for your transportation back home or to a designated medical facility.

In the unfortunate event of your passing while traveling, Assist America will handle all arrangements and expenses to return your remains home.

If you’re traveling with children and become incapacitated, Assist America will arrange and pay for their care, either by returning them home or providing local childcare.

Before your trip, Assist America can provide valuable information on passport and visa requirements, immunization regulations, country profiles, and security advisories.

  • Lost luggage or document assistance: Help recover and deliver lost bags, liaise with transportation companies to replace lost travel tickets, and contact necessary agencies to solve issues of lost passports and other documents.
  • Legal and interpreter referrals: Locate legal counsel and interpreter services. Bail bonds can be arranged in jurisdictions where they are legal.
  • Emergency message service

Who is covered?

As an IU resident with long-term disability insurance, you and your family members are automatically covered by Assist America. This includes your spouse and dependent children through age 26, regardless of student or marital status.

When are you covered?

Assist America services are available whenever you travel outside of your home country or 100 miles or more from your permanent residence within your home country for less than 90 days. If your trip exceeds 90 days, you’ll need to contact Assist America directly.
