Remote & Out-of-State Work

How remote work works at IU

We believe in a collaborative approach to remote work. If your department allows remote work and your role is suitable, you can work with your supervisor to create a plan that meets both your needs and the university’s. This includes:

  • Assessing your workspace
  • Setting clear expectations as part of your annual Expectation Conversation
  • Maintaining open communication

While we value the flexibility of remote work, we also strive to maintain a strong on-campus presence and foster a vibrant university community.

Requesting a remote work arrangement

You must document all remote work arrangements in the Remote Work Arrangement (RWA) system.

RWA system update

On Jan. 21, 2026, the Remote Work Arrangement (RWA) system, which documents remote work arrangements established by staff and their supervisors, was reset. All previously submitted RWAs have been inactivated. Staff approved to work remotely are responsible for (re)submitting an RWA after their Expectation Conversation, no later than the May 15 Performance at IU deadline. Information for leaders and staff is available.

International employees

H-1B employees who are permitted to work remotely from a location other than initially reported in the H-1B petition should contact Office of International Services (OIS) for guidance on if an amendment to the H-1B petition and Labor Condition Application (LCA) are necessary due to the location change.
