Out-of-State and Overseas Coverage
All IU-sponsored medical plans include comprehensive medical coverage; however, the provider networks differ. Anthem plans have a nationwide and global network of physicians and hospitals, and provide out-of-network benefits for its members. The IU Health HDHP uses the IU Health provider network and its affiliates exclusively and offers no out-of-network benefits except in specific cases, including in the case of an emergency or urgent care more than 50 miles from home. See below for more information on how to find a doctor and receive medical services when out-of-state or overseas.

Find a Doctor
Access benefits when living or traveling outside Indiana by following these easy procedures:
- Find a provider: Use the “Find a Doctor” links above or call the Anthem Member Services number on your ID card.
- Call Anthem Member Services to verify coverage: Call the number on the back of your ID card to obtain precertification for certain services.
- Visit a provider and present your Anthem ID card: Your Anthem ID card contains a three-letter alpha prefix. Indiana University's prefix is CAN for all plans, except Fellowship Recipients. Fellowship Recipients should use YZD. The provider will verify your benefits and eligibility then electronically file the claim with Anthem.
In cases where medical services are received from international providers who are not part of the BlueCross BlueShield Global Core, members can submit claims to Anthem for reimbursement using the International Claim Form. Please keep all receipts from medical services received internationally and attach those to the claim form to submit to Anthem.International claims are reimbursed at the in-network rate. Receipts in other currencies and languages will be translated as part of the reimbursement process, and reimbursement will be based on the exchange rate on the date of the medical service.
