Student and Scholar Health Insurance

Students who are required to have health insurance are automatically enrolled in coverage each semester. This includes international students and certain graduate-level professional science students. Appointed Postdoctoral Fellows and graduate students with a student academic appointment or fellowship award may also be eligible for IU-sponsored coverage. Domestic graduate and undergraduate students who do not qualify for other IU-sponsored coverage can enroll in the voluntary student plan. For information about the plans, follow the links below. All of IU’s student health insurance plans are managed by University Health Plans (UHP) and Anthem.

International Plan

This plan is mandatory for all international students, visiting scholars and Intensive English Program (IEP & PIE) students. This plan is also available to eligible Optional Practical Training (OPT) students.

Professional Plan

This plan is mandatory for domestic graduate students in the following health science programs:

  • School of Medicine
  • School of Dentistry
  • School of Health and Human Sciences
  • School of Optometry
  • Department of Speech/Language Pathology Master’s & Doctor of Audiology program

Student Academic Appointees (SAA), Appointed Postdoctoral Fellows & Fellowship Recipients Plan

SAAs, Appointed Postdoctoral Fellows and Fellowship Recipients who meet the minimum eligibility requirements noted below are automatically enrolled in this plan each semester. The university pays the full monthly premium cost for the student’s coverage.

Eligible appointees include:

  • Student Academic Appointees appointed at 37.5 FTE or greater and enrolled in at least six credit hours or the G901 thesis/dissertation equivalent each semester (summer excluded)
  • Appointed Postdoctoral Fellows, e.g. T-32 grants
  • Fellowship Recipients with an award of $6,750 or more per semester (Fall and/or Spring) and enrolled in at least six credit hours or the G901 thesis/dissertation equivalent each semester (summer excluded).
