Update: Required changes due to Fair Labor Standards Act

Indiana University Human Resources (IUHR) has been monitoring and preparing for changes to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) since the Department of Labor (DOL) proposed new overtime rules in August 2023.

On April 23, 2024, the DOL released its final rule, which includes two increases to the minimum salary threshold for overtime exemption.

This DOL ruling includes two deadlines for implementation: July 1, 2024, and January 1, 2025.

Employees, supervisors, and units should not take any action at this time. IUHR is partnering closely with university and campus leadership as well as Academic Affairs offices to determine a consistent and equitable course of action for all positions impacted by this legislation.

Instructional faculty at IU are generally exempt from this minimum salary threshold if their primary duty is teaching, tutoring, instructing or lecturing.
