What we mean by an “engagement” survey

An “engaged” employee is someone who is involved in and enthusiastic about their work.

When you feel engaged with your job, you have more energy to take on challenges, your productivity increases, and you positively affect those around you. You are even more likely to be safer on the job and achieve better outcomes.

Our engagement survey features 25 questions (including Gallup's Q12) that are designed to help us discover whether the conditions for engagement are being created for every employee. The answers to these questions offer us insight into how you feel about Indiana University—especially whether you feel supported and able to thrive in your work.

The survey and results are not punitive. They are intended to provide a measurement of a specific point in time (the survey period). The results give teams data on engagement to discuss, compare, and use in action planning.

Not engaged
Productive, but not connected to your job and IU as a whole. You are likely to miss more workdays, and more likely to leave your job.

Actively disengaged
Physically present, but psychologically absent. You are unhappy and more likely to share your unhappiness with others.

Engagement is not a one-time event. It is what happens after the survey that leads to team growth and improved performance.”

My Voice at IU is meant to guide our efforts to increase your engagement with your job and ensure IU remains a workplace that values, supports, and develops its employees.

The survey itself is only the first step in an ongoing process of improvement, providing a starting point for discussion, action planning, and follow-up.

When you participate in recurring surveys and action planning, you help us build on efforts to positively impact the workplace for all of us.
