Gain or Loss of Non-IU Coverage

If you or your dependents gain or lose coverage elsewhere (such as through a spouse’s plan or employment), you may be eligible to make changes to the following plans. You must make these changes within 30 days of the event.

Important Information

The following circumstances will allow you to make changes to your benefit plans outside of Open Enrollment:

  • You involuntarily lose outside coverage
  • Your spouse or child begins, loses, or changes employment or benefits at IU or elsewhere
  • The premium cost of your spouse's or child's coverage significantly increases (generally 10% or more)
  • Your spouse or child has an Open Enrollment opportunity elsewhere
  • Changes must be consistent with the other employer's coverage change

Documentation

Accepted Documentation for Gain of Non-IU Coverage:

  • Confirmation statement of benefits that outlines the coverages (i.e., medical/dental/vision), enrollee(s), and effective start date of coverage.
  • Letter from employer’s human resources department or insurance company that outlines coverages (i.e., medical/dental/vision), covered person(s), and effective start date of coverage.

Accepted Documentation for Loss of Non-IU Coverage:

  • COBRA letter from the former employer (please provide a full copy)
  • Letter from employer’s human resources department or insurance company that indicates what coverage(s) are terminating (i.e., medical/dental/vision), covered person(s) and effective termination date of coverage(s).

In addition, when newly adding a spouse and/or dependent(s) due to loss of non-IU coverage, dependent documentation (i.e. marriage certificate, birth certificate, etc.) must be submitted.

Medical and Dental Coverage

You may take the following actions. The action must be consistent with the qualifying event.

  • Change your level of coverage by adding or removing dependents.
  • Cancel medical and/or dental coverage if you have enrolled in coverage elsewhere.
  • Enroll in a medical and/or dental plan if you lost eligibility elsewhere.

Supplemental Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance

You may take the following actions:

  • Change the level of coverage, add coverage, or terminate coverage.

Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)

You may take the following actions:

  • Change the amount of your allocation for health care and dependent care reimbursement accounts.

Health Savings Account (HSA)

If you enroll in a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) you are also eligible to enroll in a Health Savings Account (HSA). Once enrolled, you may change your contribution amount at any time by completing an HSA Enrollment/Change form.

You are responsible for tracking your contributions to ensure you don’t exceed the IRS annual contribution limits. If removing your spouse or dependent(s) results in excessive contributions, you must work with Nyhart to resolve the issue. See the Instructions for IRS Form 8889 or contact a tax advisor for additional information.

NOTE: if you enroll in the HSA or change your HDHP coverage level on or after September 1, you will not receive IU’s contribution to your HSA for the remainder of the calendar year.
