IU Staff Core Competencies |
IU Staff Employees,
Several of our HR2020 initiatives seek to enhance staff engagement and ensure Indiana University employees feel valued and supported. An important factor in being engaged at work is knowing what is expected—not only in our job duties—but also more broadly: What should we expect of ourselves and one another?
To help answer this question, I’m pleased to introduce the IU Staff Competencies which establish a framework of skills and behaviors that contribute to success for staff at IU. Simply put, competencies are observable skills and behaviors that help describe “how we work” at IU.
IU Staff Core Competencies
There are five core competencies all IU staff should demonstrate:
(Academic positions are not a part of this initiative.)
Ensures Accountability
Holding self and others responsible and accountable to meet commitments
|
Collaboration
Building partnerships and working collaboratively with others to meet shared objectives |
Instills Trust
Gaining confidence and trust of others through honesty, integrity, and authenticity |
Values Differences
Recognizing the value that different perspectives and cultures bring to an organization |
Customer Focus
Building strong internal and external customer relationships and delivering customer-centric solutions |
How IU Staff Competencies Will Be Used
These competencies will serve as the foundation for upcoming Human Resources initiatives to enhance recruitment, performance management, training, development, and more. Core competency-based behavioral interviewing will be the first university-wide application of the IU Staff Competencies. This will ensure the skills and behaviors IU values are clearly communicated and assessed during the hiring process and will help strengthen our workforce as it grows.
What You Can Do Now
I encourage you to take a few minutes to learn more about the IU Staff Competencies online and reflect on how they relate to you and your role at IU. The website has answers to common questions, a timeline, and guidance on how you can develop the core competencies. If you have questions, you can talk to your HR representative, submit them through the website, or askHR. You will learn more about the IU Staff Competencies as related HR initiatives are introduced.
I am confident the IU Staff Competencies will allow us to approach our work with a shared understanding of how we can best work together to move IU forward. This is another step toward a more engaged staff, and ultimately, a stronger IU workforce.
