IU Resident and Fellow Open Enrollment

Open Enrollment for IU Medical & Optometry Residents

Open Enrollment is closed

During Open Enrollment, you have the opportunity to add, drop, or change these benefits for 2026:

  • Medical and dental coverage
  • Supplemental AD&D insurance
  • Critical illness insurance
  • Healthcare and dependent care flexible spending account (FSA)

If you took no action during Open Enrollment:

  • You will not be enrolled in the healthcare or dependent care FSA. You must re-enroll in these accounts each year to participate.
  • The rest of your benefits will roll over and continue in 2026.

Elections made during Open Enrollment go into effect on January 1, 2026, and must stay in place for the entire year unless you experience a qualified life event (such as the birth of a child or marriage).

Benefit plans not listed on this page are not associated with Open Enrollment and can be changed at any time during the year.

Important reminders

Premiums for coverage: The university or the hospital where you’re completing your residency covers the full cost of your monthly premiums for medical, dental, life, and disability insurance. This coverage extends to your eligible dependents, too. You’re responsible for any out-of-pocket costs for health care, including deductibles, copays, and coinsurance.

Mid-year benefit changes: You can change your benefits and add or remove dependents during the annual Open Enrollment period each fall. At other times of the year, changes can only be made if you experience a qualified life event, such as marriage or the birth of a child.

Dual coverage is prohibited under IU benefit plans. This means that you cannot be covered:

  • as an employee on more than one plan; or
  • as both a employee and a dependent/spouse; or
  • as a dependent on more than one IU plan.
