Step 3: Enroll in IU benefits within 30 days

> If you will be enrolling dependents be sure to read the section below about dependent documentation.

Time-sensitive enrollment

The importance of enrolling in certain benefit plans within 30 days cannot be overstated. As you get closer to selecting which benefits to elect, be sure to understand the time requirements spelled out below. Once you are ready to enroll, the online enrollment system will guide you through the process.

Enroll now or wait until next year

You have 30 days from your hire date to enroll yourself and your eligible dependents in the plans listed below.

  • Medical
  • Dental
  • Personal Accident Insurance
  • Tax Saver Benefit

If you miss the deadline, you must wait until the next opportunity, which is Open Enrollment held in November, with an effective date of January 1 of the following year.

Enrollment without proof of good health

In order to take advantage of acceptance without proof of good health, you must enroll in the following plans within 30 days. Application to enroll after this date must be accompanied by a Medical History Statement.

  • Long-term Disability
  • Supplemental Life Insurance

Automatic enrollment but conditions may apply

You will be automatically enrolled in the plans listed below; however, conditions apply and additional steps are required on your part, some within 30 days. The online benefits enrollment system will guide you through this process.

  • IU Retirement Plan
  • Tax Deferred Account (TDA) Plan
  • Retirement & Savings Plan
  • Basic Life Insurance

Dependent documentation

If you are enrolling a dependent (spouse or child) who has never been covered under your IU-sponsored health plan, you must submit copies of supporting documentation.

Without documentation, dependent coverage will be canceled back to the initial date of coverage. Information regarding which dependents are eligible for coverage can be found online at Eligibility for Medical and Dental Plans webpage

After submitting your online benefit elections, information on which documents are required and where to submit them will be emailed to you. Contact University Human Resources at or 812-856-1234 for help enrolling.
