Mid-Year Benefit Changes

Life event changes

Applies to these benefits: Medical and dental insurance, critical illness insurance, supplemental AD&D insurance, and flexible spending accounts

Certain major life events—like getting married or divorced, having a child, or losing non-IU health coverage—enable you to enroll in, change, or drop your your coverage during the year. When you experience one of these IRS-defined qualifying life events, you have 30 days to make corresponding changes to your benefits. Here’s how to request a life event benefit change.

  1. Go to one one.iu.edu and search for/select the Employee Center task. Log in using your IU credentials and Duo.
  2. Select Benefit Details, then Life Events.
  3. Select the type of event you experienced.
  4. Enter the event date at the bottom of the screen, then select Start Life Event. Use the actual date of the event (“as of” date), which must match your supporting documentation. Dates more than 30 days old or in the future are not accepted.
  5. Review the information on the Welcome screen, then select Next.
  6. Confirm and save the date of the event and any other required details, then select Next
  7. Upload and save your supporting documentation by selecting the Add Attachment button then following the prompts. When you’re done, select Next to proceed. If you don’t have your documentation available, contact IU Human Resources at askhr@iu.edu or +1-812-856-1234.
  8. Verify or update your personal details and payroll information (if applicable), then select Next on each screen to proceed.
  9. Select the Start My Enrollment button.
  10. Select each benefit plan and enroll, drop, update, or confirm your elections. When you’re finished with each plan, select Done to return to the Benefits Enrollment screen.
  11. When you’re done making all of your elections, select the Submitbutton at the bottom of the screen.
  12. A confirmation will appear on the screen. Select View to review your submission, or Done to complete online enrollment.
  13. Check your IU email in the next 24 – 48 hours for a confirmation. If you don’t receive one, your changes were not submitted properly. Try logging back in to your event and re-submitting. If that doesn’t work, contact askhr@iu.edu or +1-812-856-1234 for assistance.
